OUTLINE OF INSTITUTE
Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region
Hokkaido is distinguished by its cold, snowy climate and soft, peaty soils. These can often be problematic for civil engineering works. The Institute conducts advanced research for cost-effective development of infrastructure, environmentally friendly improvements to infrastructure and the mitigation of natural disaster damages to infrastructure. It conducts research efficiently and effectively, and cooperates with other organizations. It has continued to provide technical guidance, including on measures against disasters, to disseminate research results. In April 2006, the Institute was combined with the Public Works Research Institute, another Independent Administrative Agency under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and started anew as the Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region. The new Institute will continue fulfilling the task of supporting the development of Hokkaido through investigation, examination, research and development of civil engineering technologies as well as dissemination of research results to cold regions and other areas.
