Case 5:
Field survey on damage from the Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and Tsunami of 2004
The Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and its subsequent tsunami occurred on December 26, 2004, causing severe damage to coastal states of the Indian Ocean. As members of a survey team supported by Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, we dispatched researchers. On the east coast of Sri Lanka, we investigated tsunami run-up and damage to river structures. We found that it was probable that the scale of the run-up was influenced by the river mouth topography and that many bridges had fallen because their abutments were vulnerable to tsunami run-up.
